Welcome to Term 3!

100 Days of Kindergarten

Our 100 Days of Kindergarten celebration was a huge success! We were absolutely blown away by the creativity, effort, and attention to detail in the students' costumes. A heartfelt thank you to all the parents for your incredible support and hard work in helping bring the day to life! The students embraced their roles as 100 year olds with enthusiasm and imagination, and they had such a fantastic day.

Writing

For Writing on Monday, Kindergarten students reflected on what they think life will be like when they are 100 years old. Their ideas were creative and funny, from using walking sticks and wearing glasses to owning their own pets.

Initial Lit

We have already learnt two new sounds in Initial Lit this term: 'w' and 'ck'. Kindergarten were very excited to learn their first digraph! We’ve been practising the saying, “A digraph is two letters, one sound.”

Here are some sentences that align with our targeted sounds and tricky words, which you can practise reading and writing at home! If your child is up for a challenge, I’ve included the last image with our upcoming digraphs: ‘ss’, ‘ll’, and ‘ff’.

Maths

For Week 3, we are learning to identify half the length and the halfway point. Students will know if they are successful if they can divide a length into two equal parts, distinguish between the halfway point and half a length and describe positions as 'about halfway', 'more than halfway' or 'less than halfway'.

Here are some tips for home!

A half is one of two equal parts of a whole. This is the beginning of your child’s understanding of fractions. Encourage your child to discover that a fraction is a part of a whole — and the whole can be an object, a group of objects, or even a number. To make a half, the whole must be split into two equal parts.

Try finding everyday opportunities to explore halves together. Here are some simple ideas you can try at home:

  • Cut a ribbon or string in half.
  • Share a sandwich by cutting it into two equal pieces.
  • Fold a piece of paper in half and talk about how both sides match.
  • Pour juice or water into two cups evenly — are they the same?
  • Count a small group of toys (like 6 cars) and separate them into two equal groups.
  • Break a chocolate bar or biscuit in half and compare the pieces.
  • Draw a circle and colour in half of it.
  • Use playdough to roll a ball and then split it into two equal parts.
