We are also reading My Place by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, a picture book that explores one location through the eyes of different children across generations.

  • We are comparing and contrasting two different time periods in a text using a Venn Diagram.
  • We are using think marks (annotations) to deepen our understanding while reading
  • We are building our comprehension through a range of reading activities.
  • We are understanding what contractions are and how to use them correctly in our reading and writing.

Maths

In Week 4, we finalised our subtraction unit, focusing on using strategies to build accuracy and confidence.

  • We renamed subtraction number sentences using vertical subtraction to solve problems accurately.

In Week 5, we begin our new unit on division, focusing on sharing and grouping using hands-on materials and visual models like arrays to help with understanding and problem solving.

  • We are learning the language of division to help us solve problems and explain our thinking.
  • We are sharing using arrays with remainders to explore what happens when groups don’t divide evenly.
  • We are exploring the link between multiplication and division using fact families.

🌏 Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is History.

This term in Inquiry, we are exploring the history of Australia and how it connects to people, cultures and events over time.

  • We are learning about Captain James Cook and his journeys to the Southern Hemisphere.
  • We are learning about the First Fleet and the early arrival of the British in Australia.
  • We are watching episodes from My Place on ABC iView to explore how life has changed over time and recording our reflections in class.

🧠 Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL, we are building our understanding of belonging, inclusion, and respectful interactions.

  • We are examining what belonging means to us and how it might look different for others.
  • We are identifying similarities and differences between people and groups, and ways to help others feel included.
  • We are learning what consent means and how to respond respectfully by asking for or giving/not giving permission in different situations.

🗞️News and reminders

Drink bottles:

Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.

Homework:

Students are encouraged to complete one or two activities from the homework grid each week for the rest of the term. Once an activity is completed, they just need to cross it off and write the date in the box so teachers can keep track of what’s been done.

Reading continues to be an important part of homework, and we encourage students to read for at least 10 minutes on 3 to 4 nights each week.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
