Safety Week & Visual Arts

As part of Safety Week this week, students across the school from Prep - Year Six created visual representations of safe adults in their lives whom they can talk to if they are feeling unsafe. We discussed:

  • All children have the right to feel safe
  • How can I get help if I don’t feel safe
  • Who are the 5 safe adults in my life
  • If I am feeling unsafe or worried, I can seek help from these adults

Students in the junior school represented these people using paper dolls. Junior students explored the text ‘The Paper Dolls’ By Julia Donaldson. We discussed the cycle of kindness and how we can spread kindness in our lives.

Students in the senior school traced their hands and illustrated each finger as a safe adult. The senior students explored the story ‘Your head’s not the place to store problems’ by Josh Pyke. This book encourages students to share their worries. Some reflections from the students were:

  • Don’t bottle up your worries and feelings; express yourself, and you will feel better
  • If you have a problem and you are really worried, you can speak to a safe adult to get help, and they can help you
  • Sharing a problem doesn't make it disappear, but it makes you feel a lot lighter
  • Pets are good at listening, but if we have a big worry or don't feel safe, we need to speak to an adult

The artworks from Safety Week will be laminated and sent home with students.

If you would like to listen to the story ‘Your Head’s not the place to store problems’ at home, you can listen to it on Story Box Library. You can download the app on your phone or use an internet browser.

There are some great ideas for discussions at home at the end of the book.
