Student Achievement: Generations in Jazz Festival

I congratulate all students and staff who participated in the Generations in Jazz Festival earlier this month. This is an annual event during which our young musicians and members of the Stage and Jazz Bands perform alongside similar bands from across the country in a celebration of music.

As this was also a competition, I congratulate all the students and staff on their achievements:

Stage Band placed 3rd in Division 2.2, and

Jazz Band placed 7th in Division 4.1

Kyhan Douglas-Dwyer (Year 9, Pakana House) was selected on Lead Tenor Saxophone for the Division 2 Super Band. Kyhan consistently works hard and is deserving of this accolade.

Congratulations Kyhan.

Gridiron World Cup 2024

Congratulations to Darcy Shead (Year 12, Pakana House) who has been selected to play for Australia in the upcoming Gridiron World Cup in Canada from 14 – 30 June.

This is an amazing achievement, and we wish Darcy all the very best as he engages with this amazing opportunity and experience. We look forward to hearing from Darcy on his return. Well done!

I extend a personal invitation to all members of our community to attend our Drama Ensemble Performances this week.

The students have been working very hard to bring their performances together and a receptive audience would be the encouragement they need to continue in their work for future performances.

Eltham High School Anthology 2023

The launch of the Eltham High School Anthology 2023 took place on Tuesday 14 May. The Anthology is a student edited and produced publication that incorporates both student writing and artwork. It is the only publication of its kind associated with a secondary school.

The launch was a very welcoming event where members of the Student Anthology Team presented to an audience of Year 7 students, Anthology winners, and their parents and carers.

This year’s Anthology titled “Reflection of the Ink” was launched by local, well renowned writer and past Eltham High School student, James Phelan. James’ presentation was both informative and entertaining.

Congratulations to Raynold Kumar for his organisation of the event and a big thank you to him for the support that he provides to the Anthology team throughout the year.

Congratulations to all the recipients of the awards.  Two students were recognised at each level of the school for either their writing or artwork and it was great to see the presence of representatives of Year 12, 2023 at the event.

The launch was followed by a workshop delivered by James Phelan for our Student Anthology Team and a number of other selected students.

I thank James for having made the time to be with us for the launch and for his willingness to impart some of his knowledge and wisdom through the workshop.

STEAM Centre Project

We have completed the design of the project and this will be presented at the School Council meeting on Wednesday 15 May. Following School Council’s input, the architect will move to documenting the project in readiness for it to go out to tender. Following the conclusion of the tender process, we will have the final designs and I am looking forward to sharing them with you. I will certainly keep you informed of the timeline for the work to begin and possible completion dates.

To date, the architects have been great to work with, they have listened to our brief and have responded accordingly. Let’s wait and see where they take it from here.

Eltham High School Working Bee

I take this opportunity to thank all the families, staff and students who attended our Working Bee on 5 May. A great deal of work was achieved; primarily the planting around the Sensory Garden area, lots of weeding and cutting back as well as a good deal of mulching.

It was a real community effort and the community spirit was evident in the way that we all came together, worked alongside each other and got the work done.

I commend the work of the Grounds Committee and acknowledge the work of Ross McKinnon, Anna Panas and our Maintenance staff Ben Dawes and Adam Moar in supporting the Ground Committee to identify work, plan for it and ensure that all that is required on the day is available for a successful outcome.

The weather was on our side, it was great day and I am certainly looking forward to seeing more of our community engage with the school at the next Working Bee.
