Indonesia Trip

The Indonesia trip was undoubtedly one of the best trips I've been on in years. It was unique because, for the first time, I could (mostly) communicate with the people in their own language, which made it quite an educational experience. Reflecting on those 10 days, one of my favourite experiences was riding around in a Becak (pedicab—now that is the true way to travel, forget cars!), as well as visiting Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple on the planet. Not to mention the night we all played Among Us (or tried to).

But without a shadow of a doubt, I will never forget the night when my brother ate three whole fish in one dinner, and they weren’t small fish! Overall, I loved the trip, and if you study Indonesian or are just looking for a great holiday, I highly recommend going on this trip if you get the chance.

Going to Jogja (Yogyakarta) was an amazing experience, and one that I will never forget. It was surreal to be immersed in a culture that shares little similarity with ours, but also gave further perspective on how fortunate we are, with things we take for granted like clean water unavailable. Nevertheless, we were able to learn lots about Indonesian culture, especially as we explored malls and streets and got to learn about how Indonesian residents lived their day to day lives. I think my favourite part of the trip was interacting and talking to the locals. They were extremely kind and were patient despite an obvious language barrier and made me felt more welcomed. Overall, I had an extraordinary experience, and I’m glad I was able to be surrounded by friends that just enhanced the experience and made it more memorable. In the end, it won’t be the scorching days or the lack of clean water I remember, it will be the memories created, and the experiences had that will last with me for a lifetime.

The trip to Yogyakarta was an unforgettable journey for everyone who went. We tried new cuisines, viewed incredible sights, and experienced a new culture. Speaking with locals challenged us, and forced us to improve upon our skills for effective communication.  I personally really enjoyed trying out many traditional Indonesian dishes, all with new tastes and flavours. Traveling in becak's was also a highlight of my trip, being extremely fun to get a full view of the it while feeling the soft breeze. Overall, this trip was fantastic, and I would love to return someday. Thanks to Pak Survi and Ibu Timi for making it possible.
