ANZAC Day

Gallipoli Veteran

On ANZAC Day we honoured one of our earliest staff members, Mr. Ashley Vines, who served with valour in the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I. Despite being severely wounded in the Dardanelles on April 25, 1915, Ashley displayed incredible resilience. After being operated on and repatriated home the same year due to his injuries— which included wounds to his arm, the loss of one eye, and shock— he was permanently discharged from service.

Undeterred by his injuries, Ashley re-enlisted once he had 'recovered,' serving at Headquarters in Royal Park during the ongoing war in Europe. Between the end of the war and joining Huntingtower, Mr. Vines earned his B.Ed and his Diploma of Teaching. Although originally from Melbourne, he joined our staff in 1934, transitioning from St. Peters College in Adelaide.

An experienced coach, Mr. Vines immediately took on coaching duties for the boys' football and cricket teams. In addition to coaching, he taught Physics, Chemistry, Latin, and Mathematics. His dedication to education and his service to his country exemplify the values we hold dear at Huntingtower. We remember and honour Mr. Ashley Vines for his service and contributions to our community.

ANZAC Assembly

Our ANZAC Day assembly was a beautiful service that honoured our friends, family, and community members who have served our country. We want to express our gratitude to Toby Gough (Class of 2023) for returning to play The Last Post, Ms Kayla Sims and the Year 12 Chamber Choir for their beautiful choral rendition of "We Will Remember Them," Mr David Mowat and the Symphony Orchestra for accompanying the assembly, and to Mr Andrew Phillips and Emily M-T for sharing their family stories with us during the assembly.
