Learning and Teaching
💻 Digital Technology Update 💻
After a STEM filled term, all of our students ended the year with some Christmas based mouse skills activities! The students enjoyed creating gingerbread houses, decorating christmas trees, completing santa tracker activities, word searches, making cards, minecraft scenes and much more!
If any students would like to access these activities over the holidays, remember you can always access Google Classroom at home, or our student portal!
Juniors
For our final session of DT in the juniors, our students used the BeeBots completing Christmas challenges, helping Santa to collect the presents and deliver them to the house, all while avoiding the storms!
The teamwork and problem solving has been fantastic to see!
Seniors
The seniors completed their rocket challenge, all with varying levels of success. It was great to see the creative thinking and problem solving in action. Each class presented their rocket which had to be powered by either a solid, liquid or a gas. The students created, balloon rockets, pop rockets, mentos rockets, hydro powered rockets, and rockets using bicarb soda and vinegar. The scientific thinking and ability to edit and to plan for how they could improve is what really stood out during these experiments and the students should all be very proud of their efforts!
All students have ended the year with a reflection. It has been great to be able to look back on all of the fun things we have done this year and to start getting excited for what is in store for DT in 2024!
Student Wellbeing in 2023
What a busy year 2023 has been. We have had so many wonderful experiences and memories this year. The wellbeing of our SFS students is always central to all we do. Here are some of the memories from this year that highlight the importance of Wellbeing.
SWEL week
We kicked of the year with SWEL week with a focus on teachers and students getting to know each other and build strong relationships.
PBL
We continued to use the framework Positive Behaviours for Learning. Students had weekly social skills lessons to unpack our Expectation Matrix. Children received PBL cards for demonstrating expected behaviours and we had lucky weekly raffle winners who got some free time of came dressed in casual clothes for a day.
Harmony Day
We celebrated Harmony Day in March where the children came dressed in cultural dress from their background or wore orange. The children learnt about diversity and respecting our multicultural school.
Whole school focus on Child safety
During Term 2, we had a whole day where the students learnt about different aspects of
Child safety. This included a wonderful performance by a theatre group who taught the children important messages about bullying and cyber safety.
Walk Safely to school day
The children were encouraged to ride, scoot or bike ride to school. They were allowed to come dressed in bright crazy socks. The local supermarket provided free fruit for the children as they arrived at school.
Twilight Market
What a fantastic evening our Twilight market was. It was fantastic to see so many students and their family with stalls and having a great time at the market!
Lego Club
The children thoroughly enjoyed Term 3 Lego Club. They made new friends and worked co operatively on a group build each week.
SPORTS NEWS
AFL CLINICS
Students had a great time at their AFL Clinics this week. Both Juniors and Seniors had two clinics each and we made good use of our new multipurpose hall thanks to Melbourne weather. Once again we would like to thank the coaches from the AFL Schools Program and our staff who always support any special programs organised for the students.
GRADE 5 BIKE EDUCAITON
Congratulations to all the Grade 5s who complete Level 1 of Bike Education. They will come home with a certificate indicating they have completed Level 1. Next year as Grade 6s they will complete the second component of Bike Education where they will implement the skills they have learnt this year during pathway rides. We will send out more detailed information early Term 1. We will also need some parent helpers to accompany the students on their rides.
If student bikes are still in the bike shed, please pick them up by Tuesday next week. We would like all bikes taken home before the holidays.
I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! I hope all the students have a restful holiday ready to start next year with lots of new and exciting sports to try.
