Performing Arts Term Overviews
Prep | In Term 1, students in prep will develop their acting skills through theatre games. We are focusing on facial expressions and body movements to show how we are feeling and what emotion is being expressed. We will also be exploring the use of puppets to retell popular fairy tales. By the end of Term 1, students will be able to confidently explain and demonstrate how to tell a story through their body movements and facial expressions. |
Year 1 | In Term 1, students in year 1 focus on drama. They will learn how to use facial expression, voice and body movements to show their emotions through activities such as Music Statute and Follow the Leader. |
Year 2 | In Term 1, students have been focusing on exploring drama and acting through theatre games and activities. Through ‘Emotional Statues’ they have been demonstrating what different emotions look like in relation to their facial expressions and body movements. We are currently exploring mime and how you can act without speaking. By the end of the term, students will confidently and safely put on a performance where they demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of creating a character through mime. |
Year 3 | In Term 1, students in year 3 focus on drama. They will learn how to use voice, body movements, facial expression and space to express their emotions through activities such as movement & scenarios and follow the leader. |
Year 4 | In Term 1, students in Year 4 will focus on drama, in particular improvisation. They will explore the skills of acceptance, reaction, voice, movement and characterisation through a variety of games and activities. To complement this, the grade 4’s will be engaging in small group and whole class discussions to reflect on their performances through a critical eye. This program will culminate in small improvised performances based around the character they have created. |
Year 5 | In Term 1, students in Year 5 will focus on drama, in particular improvisation and scripting. They will explore the skills of acceptance, reaction, voice, movement and characterisation through a variety of games and activities. To complement this, the grade 4’s will be engaging in small group and whole class discussions to reflect on their performances and ensure that there is a sense of narrative structure. This program will culminate in small scripted or semi improvised performances based around the character they will create earlier in the term. |
Year 6 | In Term 1, students in Year 6 will focus on drama, in particular improvised and scripted. They will explore the skills of acceptance, reaction, voice, movement and characterisation through a variety of games and activities. To support this the students will be exploring the impact of genre on performance, tying into their literacy studies. They will be engaging in a reflective practice to support them developing a critical eye for their own and others performances. The program will finish with the students creating a set of characters and a small script focused on a specific genre. |
Year 7 | During their Performing Arts classes in Term 1, students in Year 7 will be focusing on drama. Students learn about the different practices, disciplines and traditions that have shaped the expression of culture locally, nationally and globally. Students are performers and audience members. They make, respond and learn to appreciate the specific ways this occurs. Through a range of activities, projects and performances students build their confidence, communication, problem solving and collaboration skills.
