SCHOOL  FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP

As part of The School For Student Leadership, a group of eight year 9 students, including myself, collaborated on a project aimed at making a positive impact in our community. Our chosen venue was Mayflower Aged Care Home, where we spent about two hours engaging in various activities, such as arts and crafts, games, and bingo, with the residents. The experience provided valuable insights into the diversity within the older generation and sparked meaningful conversations about their individual pasts.

Whilst sitting at the arts and crafts station, I had the privilege of assisting Lina, a resident with limited physical and cognitive abilities, in crafting a Christmas card for her friend. Another valuable encounter was with Brenda, a resident deeply passionate about arts and crafts, who brought along her own collection of stationary. These interactions enriched my understanding and made the act of volunteering and giving back to our community even more gratifying.

In addition to our time spent with the residents, we dedicated effort to express our gratitude to the dedicated staff at Mayflower Aged Care Home by preparing an appreciation hamper. This acknowledgment aimed to recognize their commendable efforts in creating a nurturing environment for the residents.

The group would like to acknowledge the incredible generosity of one of our parent community, Jenny Stefos (owner of the Brighton Button Shop) who went above and beyond to donate a beautiful craft box of crochet activities, which were much loved by the residents.
