Library 2025

Library News
This week at SJV we celebrated the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) which is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that promotes the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
Student Work Samples
Check out some writing our Grade 4/5/6 students did this week in response to the book War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.
"The last few days have been very tense, I hope Joey can survive this illness. He must survive, he must, I can’t live with the thought that he is dead, I just can’t, he must live and he will. A few days later Joey could move again, I was over the moon, I hope Joey can come home with me after the war. Joey is a horse with four white socks and a cross on his forehead. Joey survived in the end, and he is loving me the same way he did before the war." (Kaitlin Naismith)
"As the nights come and go, I am starting to get very tired but luckily I have a companion, David. It’s been a nerve-racking few days filled with joy, then sadness, then joy, but as the days go on Joey gets better day by day, night by night but as he is getting better I am becoming more and more tired." (River Jepson)
"Joey's recovery moved slowly and he got even worse. His neck and back became even more stiff. But one night, he got better. I was on the verge of tears as I heard him nicker. All the other soldiers came to the stables and cheered. “He’s gonna live ain't he?” one of the soldiers said. “Yes. He’s gonna live.” I say. "(Elle Naiken)
"Dear Diary,
Joey is still not getting better. I have to sit in the stables all day and all night. All the men have been trying to help. David even stays with me so we take it in turns to sleep. I must stay with him. I’m so proud I found him, but just to watch him. Everyday he seems to either be worse or still the same." (Emma Ruska)
"Dear Diary,
As you might know Joey is still unwell. He got his leg stuck in some sort of wire. I think it’s barbed wire. How terrible is that! I need to help Joey twenty four seven. How I found Joey, might you say, well I told David about all his features on his body and then when David was washing Joey all up he saw all his features I had mentioned! I thought David was kidding when he said it was my unique, beautiful Joey. Even though I am helping Joey, David is helping me with that a lot. He is such a nice lad! Joey is in so much pain, we need it! I love Joey and I would do anything for him." (Tilly Dunk)
Calling Parent Helpers
Have you got an hour you can spare before school pick up on a Tuesday afternoon? Pop into the library and help out with some scanning of returned books.
Parent help is also required for contacting of new books. Please see Miss Middleton in the library to collect some books if you're able to assist.
Willy Wonka's Golden Tickets - 8 still to be found!
Congratulations to those children who have borrowed a book that contains a golden ticket.
If your child discovers a golden ticket in one of their borrowed books at home, please have them bring it into the library on their library session day.
Have a great week reading!
