STEM

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics

Last Wednesday, Wangaratta High School hosted a STEM Careers presentation for the Year 10 students from both Wangaratta High School and Galen Catholic College.

The event, part of the AVISTA program, aimed to provide students and teachers across Australia with first-hand insights into career pathways in the Defence Industry. Students and staff enjoyed an engaging and interactive stage show, offering a unique opportunity to explore exciting STEM futures.

A highlight of the show was the AI robot dog that demonstrated the use of robots and AI for situational awareness. These demonstrations provided links to the role of aviation, robotics, AI and autonomous systems in the defence industry, highlighting how these fields can lead to exciting careers in tomorrow’s advanced, high-tech industries.

SCIENCE SLAM

For the second year running, CSU, GoTAFE, and Wangaratta Tech School hosted the Science Slam at the Wangaratta Regional Study Centre on Tone Road. This exciting event offers students the chance to engage in hands-on science and technology activities at both university and TAFE levels.

Students from Wangaratta High School, Galen Catholic College, Myrtleford P-12 College, and Beechworth Secondary College worked in small teams to explore a range of disciplines, including Botany, Pathology, Wine Science, Environmental Science, Robotics as well as Agriculture and Horticulture.

Challenges included becoming "bug detectives," where students identified insect specimens, and acting as engineers tasked with designing ways to deliver packages using an AI-powered robotic dog.

The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience real-world science and innovation in action.
