Celebrating our Mum's, Grandmothers and carers!

Mothers Day is set aside as a time to acknowledge those amazing ladies in our lives who have raised us, sacrificed for us and shaped our lives. For some people however, Mothers Day raises other emotions, sadness, grief, disappointment, anger, loss of a dream.

As a midwife I am regularly supporting women birth their new baby. They do this with expectant joy, sometimes some fear and obviously with some pain. These emotions often continue as you watch your children grow, as they become more independent, make mistakes, hurt themselves or you, make good choices and mature.

Despite all the preparation we do, nothing can prepare us for the rollercoaster of parenting and caring for our kids, but what an incredible privilege and joy it is to be entrusted with these precious gifts; our children! Where ever you find yourself on the rollercoaster of motherhood or caregiver, may there be more highs than lows. Let me encourage you not to fall into the trap of negative self talk, comparing yourself or your kids to others or holding yourself to an unrealistic standard. We do the best we can, I just hope that as a community we can be real with one another and share the messy experiences so that we each know we are not alone and spur one another on.

Please reach out anytime if you would like to chat over a coffee, it would be a privilege to listen :)

Here is something funny to leave you with from Dr Steve Sultanoff:

Things Moms Would NEVER Say

"How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back?"

"Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too"

"Just leave all the lights on...it makes the house look more cheery"

"Let me smell that shirt -- Yeah, it's good for another week"

"Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I'll be glad to feed and walk him every day"

"Well, if Timmy's mom says it's OK, that's good enough for me."

"The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. It's not like I'm running a prison around here."

"I don't have a tissue with me... just use your sleeve"

"Don't bother wearing a jacket - the wind-chill is bound to improve"
