Year 8 & 7B Medieval Day

On Wednesday 23rd April Year 8 and 7B students participated in Medieval Day. It was wonderful to see the array of costumes and students enjoyed a range of fun activities.

Some highlights according to students:

I really enjoyed medieval day. It made me think about how we humans slowly develop in technology, freedom and morals and made me realise how lucky we are to live in this time.

I enjoyed the minigames workshop. It was fun and tested out my balance, communication, strength and coordination. I also enjoyed learning about crime and punishment. Learning about justice and law taught me about how hard it must have been.

Archery was really fun, we got a lot of turns and I’ve got a few headshots. I also learnt a lot about how countries used the bows and different types of bows. I brought axes and dressed up as a Viking. I also liked the game activity, there were games that were entertaining.

Medieval day was a really unique and entertaining experience for me because I have never really done anything like this before. I enjoyed this event because it was not only fun, but it was also highly educational and helped me understand the different cultures of the medieval period. In this event, we did different activities, such as various medieval games, simulating a medieval environment and acting as if it was the medieval ages again. We got to wear medieval clothes and costumes but most of the people in our class really cared. Overall, the event was a full day of fun, and educational, really a memorable experience.

In the medieval day this year, we did many activities, such as archery, medieval games, Troubadours, and Crime and Punishment. In troubadours we ranked the power people had, kings, peasants, merchants and more. In our second activity, we did archery, learning how to use a bow. In our third activity we played medieval games, a special version of tug and war and guiding people from our team around blindfolded. In our fourth activity, we learnt about crime and punishment, the ways people were punished, whipping, burning, drowning and more. For the last session, everyone gathered in the gym and some participants volunteered to battle, using swords and shields. There were many people in costumes, and it was an overall fun day.

On April 23rd, my class participated in medieval day with the year 8s. We went to the oval at 9:00 am. I had troubadours first. We got in our groups. In troubadours, we learnt about social hierarchy. We next had archery, which was just shooting plastic arrows at a person-like target. Next, we played some games that they used to play in medieval times. We learnt how whole towns competed against each other in the games. Next, we learnt that the Lady runs the villages, and punishments varied. We got to see many different types of punishments. In the last session, we got to learn how knights got trained and some students got to try! Overall, I learnt loads about medieval times and had lots of fun.

On medieval day we did 4 activities and one final group activity. All of 7B and a couple of grade 8’s were in one group and did the first 4 activities together.

In the first activity we looked at Troubadours (medieval day performers) and looked at the medieval day hierarchy and who was more important than who. We also looked at what forms of entertainment were back then. Our second activity was archery, which I enjoyed a lot, because I had a lot of fun shooting our target Bill. Our third activity was games. We got to experience and play some games that they played in medieval times. This was very fun, but the most funny moment was when John ran into a chair in the blindfolded game. The final activity was crime and punishment, and I got to be a fisherman punished for crimes. It was interesting to see what types of punishments people had to face. These included getting whipped by metal, bonked on the head by a hammer, and just pure starvation. In the final activity, all of the grade 8’s and our class met up in the gym and some of us got to use different weapons to fight an instructor with armour. Overall, it was very fun and I would do it again.
