Year 8 Upcycling Market

Year 8 Upcycle Market Reflections

My group and I participated in an upcycle market which was held on 31st March. The group consisted of Aliyah, Amy, Layla and me. Our stall was called the Lucky Dip. In our lucky dip we had crocheted items, bookmarks, origami, accessories and mini mazes. We also had additional items like more complex origamis, brownies, yum yum balls, books, more bookmarks and a fun guess how many skittles and M&M’s in a jar. The prices were around $1-$5 which was very affordable. Many of our things were made from recycled materials like paper and cardboard.

Most of our items had been sold like the brownies, yum yum balls, books and guessing the skittles and M&M’s in the jar. I learnt how to repurpose the use of materials, and the potential for turning waste into valuable, unique items to sell. Many people had various different things on sale and were upcycled really well. I think, on behalf of the year 8 cohort, that everyone had lots of fun, not because of selling things but also having fun with your friends and learning about the way business works in the real world.

As we set up our stand, we carefully arranged our products, oobleck stress balls and an origami lucky dip, eagerly anticipating the arrival of students. Excitement grew as people started stopping by, examining the items we had advertised. To our surprise, we made several sales early on, exceeding our expectations. As more students gathered, our team seamlessly rotated between advertising and selling, ensuring everyone had a role.

This event was designed to promote upcycling by transforming discarded materials into useful products, with all proceeds donated to Marine Conservation Australia. As lunchtime went on, we were astonished to see our oobleck stress balls nearly sell out, something we hadn't anticipated.

In the end, the Year 8s collectively raised over $400 through our creative upcycling efforts. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that challenged us, showcased our creativity, and, most importantly, contributed to a meaningful cause.
