Term 2
On behalf of the four Houses at Blackburn High School, we would like to celebrate the end of another fantastic Term. This term, we were pleased to welcome a few new staff members, Caroline Zhang to Hollows House as the new Mentor Teacher for H6, Wei Yun Shen to Freeman House and Renee Pascolo to Dunlop House. We also farewelled Kazi Mapuranga and extend our sincere thanks for his many years of dedicated service to the Blackburn High School community. Additionally, we congratulate Jarrod Nicholson on his appointment as the third Assistant House Leader for Dunlop. We also farewelled three staff members as they began their maternity leave.
We extend our warmest wishes to Madeleine Weatherley, Kiara Bloomfield, and Simone Genevese as they welcome their new bundles of joy.
On Thursday, 24th April, we held the Blackburn High School ANZAC Day assembly. We gathered not to celebrate or glorify war, but rather to remember those who have served to defend their loved ones and fellow citizens during conflict and crisis. The assembly was led by the school captains, Holly and Mitchell, with Dane representing Dunlop to remind our student population of Sir Ernest Edward “Weary” Dunlop, an individual who embodied the values of ANZAC spirit. The ANZAC day assembly was a lovely reminder that the best way we can pay our respects to and honour the soldiers is to embody the ANZAC spirit, not just on April 25th, but every day through actions of kindness, leadership, and courage, even in times of misfortune.

This year the house points student team has been working to revolutionise and streamline the way that house points are awarded though achievements such as awards for the school values: Respect, Citizenship and Pursuit of Excellence in the hope to incentivise and encourage students to excel in the classroom and have their efforts contribute towards their respective houses as a whole. The house points team is also currently developing games and activities that mentors can partake in to earn their house points, all to encourage mentor student participation and help to develop bonds and build a sense of community between year levels in each house.

This Term, over 200 Year 7 students embarked on their first high school camp to Lake Dewar Lodge:
Year 7 camp was a great experience to have, we got to hang out with our friends, and we also got to meet lots of new people. There were many exciting activities like Kayaking, Stand-up Paddleboarding and Adventure Tunnelling. My favourite activity was the Gorge Walk and the Flying Fox, both had stunning views of the gorge and the walk down to the gorge was rocky, and it was really fun to walk and climb down, and back up.
Sonya – Year 7 House Ambassador
On Grade Seven camp the year seven students went to Lake Dewar near Baccus Marsh. There were many fun experiences and a total of 8 activities that consisted of adventure tunnelling (an escape room), mountain biking, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and many more fun events that made the camp very enjoyable. My favourite highlight was definitely the canoeing as I fell into the water nine times. This was very fun and I would do it again.
Charan – Year 7 House Ambassador
This term we had our annual Hollows House Fundraiser where all profits went to support the Fred Hollows Foundation. This donation will go towards ending avoidable blindness around the world and training healthcare workers to deal with similar issues. We had a sausage sizzle and a variety of activities such as guess the lolly jar, pick a song and foul basketball shots. We ended up raising over $2000, which will go a long way in aiding the foundation's mission!
Thank you to the Hollows student and staff leaders who helped to coordinate the day, and to all students for participating/donating , Ella and Ash – Hollows House Captains
On behalf of all four Houses, we wish everyone a safe, restful, and enjoyable break. Brittany Milner, Shona Perrin, Liam Tobin and Siobhan Dwyer.
