ANZAC DAY CEREMONY

Last Thursday we gathered as a school community at the flagpole to commemorate ANZAC Day.  The 25th April is a day of commemoration for Australians and New Zealanders where we remember victims of war and we recognise the role of our armed forces. This date marks the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.  The acronym ‘ANZAC’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

DAWN SERVICE

Thousands of people gathered before sunrise in Werribee on Anzac Day to pay tribute to Australians who lost their lives in war. The ceremony at the cenotaph included the laying of wreaths and silent tributes from people of all ages, recognising the service and sacrifice of the nation’s veterans. The annual event, organised by the Werribee RSL, saw participation from veterans, volunteers, local organisations and local schools. Cooper Matulich from Year 3 represented our school by laying a wreath as part of the ceremony.  We thank Cooper and his family for representing St John the Apostle at the ceremony.

Staffing Update

We are  pleased to announce that we have been able to secure a replacement Year 6 class teacher to take over from Mrs. Ashleigh Borg when she commences her maternity leave later in the year. Mr. Bill Bemelmans has recently relocated from Queensland and comes with vast experience within Catholic Education and remote settings such as Katherine in the NT.

LONG SERVICE LEAVE

We wish Mrs Rosalie Baldwin all the best on her Long Service Leave break. We look forward to welcoming her back Wednesday 21st May.

REGIONAL SWIMMING

Congratulations to Nina who competed at the recent Regional Swimming Championships in Geelong. Nina finished second in both of her individual events which is a fantastic achievement. We would also like to acknowledge your family for their support in taking you to these events. Thank you.

PROJECT COMPASSION

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously to our Project Compassion Appeal this year. This money will be used by the Catholic aid agency Caritas to help communities around the world who are in need of support due to poverty, war or natural disasters.

CHILD SAFETY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP

With the return to school routines, it is important that students get back into good sleep habits.  Medical experts advise that school-age kids need 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime problems can start at this age for a variety of reasons. Homework, sports and after-school activities, computers, TVs, mobile devices, and hectic family schedules all can contribute to kids not getting the sleep they need.

Sleep-deprived kids can become hyper or irritable, and may have a hard time paying attention in school.  It's important to have a consistent bedtime, especially on school nights. Leave enough technology-free time before bed to allow your child to unwind before lights-out. Try switching off the electronics at least an hour before bed and keeping TVs, computers, and mobile devices out of kids' bedrooms.

ASSEMBLY LIVE STREAM

Each Friday the students gather for a whole school assembly in the Hall.  This event is usually streamed to our Vimeo channel.  Families can view the assembly by clicking on the link which is emailed via email using your Operoo profile. The email only goes to those parents who have “receive correspondence” checked in their settings.
