News from the Chicken Coop
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Thanks to the Mitchell and Wong families for taking such great care of our school chickens over the last few weekends. We hope you got lots of eggs and baked lots of delicious goodies with them, yum!
*Christmas School Holiday Chicken Duty Roster*
Dates still needed to fill- 24-29/12, 7-10/1, 19-30/1
Every year we need families to help look after our chickens over the Christmas school holidays. If you would like to volunteer to do chicken duty for a few days during the holidays from Wednesday 18th December please let me know. You will only need to pop up to visit the chickens once a day for 3 or 4 days to check their water and food. It’s really easy and the kids love it! Duty families get to keep all the yummy eggs they collect. An information sheet will be provided with all the details prior to your duty. If you would like to put your name on the roster please email Mel at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preferred dates. First in, first choice of dates!

News from the Garden-Summer is here!
While you’re buying your egg lotto tickets on Wednesday, don’t forget to buy some of our wonderful St John’s Worm Juice to give your plants a summer boost!
Worm Juice is the name our students have given to the liquid we collect from the worm farms which is organic liquid fertiliser. It is packed full of nutrients that gives
your garden a much needed boost. Your fruit, vegetables and flowers will all appreciate a special treat of St John’s Worm Juice especially at this time of the year.
Just ask Maria in the office how much her garden loves Worm Juice! Only $2 for 2 litres, instructions are provided.
Please ask for it if it’s not on display.
Soft Plastic Reduction Initiative
Each day the Future Leaders are keeping a tally of how many wrapper free lunch boxes are in their classrooms. At the end of every 2 weeks we work out which classes have the highest percentages of wrapper free lunch boxes and the winners will be announced at assembly. The two winning classes will receive one of the Environment Mascots to keep in their room for 2 weeks and they will also receive 15 class Dojo points!
The winners for weeks 6-7 are…
5/6B and 3/4A
We only have a few weeks left of this year so let’s aim for 100%. Keep up the great work everyone!
Did you Know?…
Chickens are able to see more colours than we can.
Hens have demonstrated the ability to anticipate future outcomes based on sound recognition. For example, the sound of a storage container means food, while the sound of leaves in a tree is a neutral sound, and the sound of a hawk can indicate negative outcomes. Our hens are pretty smart!
