Feast of St Virgil's - Wednesday 27 November

We recognise the Feast Day of St Virgil each year on 27 November. He was born in 700, died in 784, and was canonised in 1232.

Virgil of Salzburg was a missionary from Ireland. He became a bishop in Austria, rebuilt a beautiful cathedral, and was known across Europe for his incredible intellect. Virgil was also known for his many disagreements with Saint Boniface. These two great minds clashed on topics from the fact the earth was a sphere to interpretations of original sin. As frustrating as it might have been, Virgil allowed these conflicts to teach him wisdom and help him grow to become the best-version-of-himself. The key, when we encounter conflict is to conduct ourselves in a way that reflects our gospel teachings – to not be aggressive, harsh, or unkind, to speak truth in love and to remember we are Christ’s ambassador.
