Exciting Culinary Adventures in Food Technology!

Our students in the Food Technology electives have been busy exploring the delicious world of café cuisine. Here’s a glimpse into what they’ve been up to!

Cafe Culture - Food Technology Elective

In the Cafe Culture elective, students have immersed themselves in the art of creating delightful café-style dishes, focusing on both presentation and flavour.

Açaí Bowls

Students have crafted refreshing bowls featuring blended açaí berries, topped with granola, fresh fruits, and a drizzle of honey. They learned valuable blending techniques and the nutritional benefits of superfoods, creating visually appealing and health-conscious meals that highlight vibrant colours and textures.

Vanilla Slice

Students mastered this classic dessert, layering creamy vanilla custard between flaky pastry, topped with a passionfruit icing. They honed their skills in pastry preparation and custard making, focusing on the balance of sweetness and creaminess, as well as the art of dessert presentation.

Chocolate Chip Biscuits

As a café favourite, students have perfected the art of baking chocolate chip biscuits—golden, chewy, and studded with rich, melty chocolate chips. They explored the importance of mixing techniques, understanding how to achieve the perfect texture, whether soft and chewy or slightly crunchy, making these biscuits a perfect addition to any café menu.

Edenhope College students assist at Seniors Concert in Edenhope

On 24th October 2024, a group of dedicated Café Culture students had the privilege of assisting at the annual Seniors Concert in Edenhope. The event, which brought together over 120 local seniors, featured a delightful performance and a delicious lunch, prepared by Alex King. The students helped with serving lunch and ensuring the event ran smoothly, contributing to a warm and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees. Their support was invaluable in making the event a success.

A special thank you to Amanda Munn from the West Wimmera Shire for providing our students with this wonderful opportunity to give back to the community. We look forward to participating in future events and continuing to strengthen connections between our students and local shire residents.

Year 7/8 Food Technology

In the Year 7 and 8 Food Technology elective, students have explored a variety of delicious treats, developing essential cooking techniques along the way.

Cheesy Crumbed Chicken

Students have enjoyed preparing cheesy crumbed chicken, coating tender chicken pieces in a flavourful breadcrumb mixture, then frying them to golden perfection. They practiced important techniques such as the crumbing process and shallow frying, while also learning about flavour pairing and seasoning to enhance their dishes.

Mini Frittatas

In their exploration of savoury dishes, students created mini frittatas—delicious, versatile little egg-based dishes that can be packed with a variety of ingredients like vegetables, cheese, and meats. They practiced cooking eggs to the perfect consistency, learning how to balance flavours and textures in their creations.

These engaging culinary experiences not only foster a passion for cooking but also equip the Food Technology students with essential skills and knowledge about food preparation. We look forward to more delicious adventures in the kitchen!

VCE Food Studies Unit 2: Delving into the Science of Cooking

In VCE Food Studies Unit 2, students are embarking on an exciting journey to explore the science behind cooking. They are developing a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical changes that occur during the cooking process, with a particular focus on how these changes affect the properties of key nutrients in food. Through the production of Chicken and Vegetable Risotto, students focused on gelatinisation, learning how starches transform during cooking. They practiced essential rice cooking techniques, ensuring they create the perfect creamy risotto that balances flavour and texture.

Last week students prepared a hearty Big Breakfast, applying their knowledge of various cooking processes, including: Emulsification (as seen in dressings and sauces), Dextrinisation (the browning of toast), Denaturation(the cooking of eggs)Through this hands-on experience, they learned how to create a balanced meal while enhancing flavours and textures using different cooking techniques.

This program not only equips students with practical culinary skills but also instils a strong understanding of the science behind their cooking. We are excited to see how their skills and knowledge continue to grow!

Year 7 2025 Transition

The Year 7 Transition students for 2025 had a fantastic first day at Edenhope College, where they experienced a diverse range of lessons, including English, Performing Arts, Art, Agriculture, and Wellbeing. The day was filled with positive energy, and students thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in their new learning environment. Their enthusiasm for these subjects was evident, and they are looking forward to their next Transition Day on November 21, 2024, where they will continue to explore what Edenhope College has to offer!
