Uncertainties about next year....
As the students enter the final weeks in their classrooms for this year the thoughts of change occurring next year can be both exciting but also worrying.
Some students can embrace the uncertainty and roll with it. But for others, mornings can be filled with nerves, and exhaustion at the end of each school day.
As a parent, it can be hard to assess what is just a passing phase, versus what needs some extra intervention.
Often, children are less verbal about the inner turmoil they are navigating – but there can be small signs such as being more emotional than normal, not eating their lunch or just looking full of nerves each morning.
For a parent of a child who is finding that their child is showing signs of worry about the end of the school year, here are a few suggestions to help through this transition time:
- Encourage good sleep patterns including earlier to bed than normal
- Provide extra assistance with planning for each day, such as getting uniform out ready for the next morning or helping you to pack their lunchbox
- Talk to your child about their friends, what they love about school, as well as their expectations
- Talk to your child about your own memories and experiences at times of major change in your life and how you made it through
- Discuss any thoughts that are causing particular concern for your child
- Contact you child’s classroom teacher to make them aware of extra support that maybe needed
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a transition session where they will meet their new teacher and class before the end of this year.
