Learning Across the
Junior School
Our term has been sprinkled with many different highlights in Year 5. From the Year 5 and 6 Musical, Cross-Country carnivals, photo days, as well as the upcoming aerobics competition in Brisbane - we have been very busy! It has been wonderful to observe the girls participate in each and every opportunity offered to them, and this enthusiasm to be involved is something that I think characterises Loreto girls in general. Their confidence to get involved, their determination to succeed and their eager engagement in everything life has to offer is incredible.

Year 5/6 Musical
A couple of weeks ago the Year 5 and 6 students presented our 2023 Musical, ‘Madagascar’, to our school community. We did lots of rehearsals and we had one big day which included photos, dress rehearsal, and a sound check. It felt very exciting to perform in front of people and put on a good show for lots of people to enjoy. We would like to thank Ms. Cobb for all her hard work of making everyone's costume. We would also like to thank Ms. Schulz for her hard work running rehearsals and all her work leading up to the performances. We would like to thank all our staff and students for helping run our musical. Finally, we would like to thank the school community for coming to support our performances. We really appreciate every single audience member. It was a fantastic celebration of hard work, lots of time and buckets of confidence and we are so lucky to be able to experience activities like this in our school.

Narratives
In 5 Gold, we have been looking at how the Lorax movie compares to the book, the story arc and then steps to plan our own narrative stories. We realized that the story arc symbolises the amount of tension in a narrative and how the characters grow and change throughout a story. We have examined how movie directors changed the Lorax to make the story line more interesting and layered. I think most of the people in my class like the movie better!
We also explored the morals in the story of ‘The Lorax’ including, not taking more than you need, the importance of taking care of the environment, and the impacts of deforestation. Our most recent focus has been on planning for our own narratives. In our scrap books, we followed 4 steps: step 1 was to choose one or two morals to include in our story, step 2, the setting: where and when, step 3 was to write down all our main characters and describe them and then for step 4 we drew a story arc to plan our narratives. We are now developing our stories with the hopes of selling them on Mission Day in a few weeks. This was a very successful store last year, and we hope that many people will want to purchase self-written stories again this year!

Young Leaders Global Citizens Club
The Young Leaders Global Citizen’s club is a club held in the Year 5 Gold classroom. It is on every Friday at lunchtime for all year levels. Each Friday a few Year 5 students run an activity to challenge themselves to run an activity. These activities are created to promote the idea of diversity. We use this club to encourage others to celebrate their differences and embrace their differences. It has been really fun and interesting leading younger years through different tasks, and we have realised how difficult it must be for teachers to organise classes. This week, a few students will be leading their peers through some learning around how Aboriginal People care for the land.

With the weather turning a little warmer this week, our curious Year 3 students have been making the most of the nature play spaces over in the Junior School. Some Year 3s were determined to be 'snail savers' and got up close with some snails and discovered some of the plants they might be hiding in. Take a look at the pictures below!
