STEM Club Term 3

Throughout Term 3, the girls in Senior STEM club have been completing their entries for the Robogals Challenge.

The Robogals Challenge is a worldwide STEM competition which is designed to encourage girls to explore different disciplines of STEM through hands-on projects. The competition comprises the completion of two minor challenges and one major challenge.

The minor challenges involve the completion of projects in the areas of Biomedical, Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics and Environmental Science.

To date, the girls have chosen to work on minor projects such as the coding, video game editing, electroplating and investigating optical illusions.

In the final weeks of the term, they will then take part in the creation of their major challenge submission, which is a self-directed investigation into any STEM project of their choosing.

They will design and run their own experiment, producing a video which explains the scientific processes taking place. This video will then make up their competition entry which will be sent to Robogals at the end of the term.

International Jazz Workshop

On Tuesday 22 August, three Loreto girls were very fortunate to participate in a masterclass with international jazz sensation and multiple Grammy Award nominee, Jazzmeia Horn. Held at the University of Adelaide, the workshop provided the opportunity for our girls to sing whilst being coached and guided in their performance.

Jazzmeia has been based in New York City since 2009. She is a vocalist, producer, activist, writer, and educator. Enthused as one of the “most exciting young vocalists in jazz” by The New York Times, Horn has been compared to vocal jazz greats such as Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson.

Whilst it was an intimidating experience, the girls found the exposure to such a highly respected artist of this calibre, to be utterly invaluable. They learned important new skills and methodologies that they will definitely take with them into their futures as vocalists. It was a once in a life time opportunity to work with one of the greatest living jazz singers in action and our students represented Loreto incredibly well.

Congratulations to Antonia Mazzone, Molly Silvy and Sienna Vacca.

Health & Wellbeing Section in York Library

As part of our ongoing support for the Loreto SEAD program, York Library is pleased to offer a new “Health & Well-being” section for our senior students.  With a focus on Positive Psychology, this growing collection located in the main entryway features a range of texts to support students across a range of areas, from mindfulness and exercise to philosophy and identity.

We are also pleased to be facilitating a resource library on behalf of Loreto Psychological Services, for our school community.  This selection of student-friendly books covers a wide range of topics that present within our support services and we are excited to be able to collaborate on such a worthy initiative.

Culture Day - A First at Loreto College

On 15 September (Friday Week 8), Loreto College is hosting its first annual ‘Culture Day’.

At Loreto, we all take pride in the diversity amongst our students, and we want to spend a day celebrating and embracing the diverse culture that shapes us and our community. A celebration of our culture promotes the confidence in all young women and helps unite us all as one, being one family who are all equally proud.

Culture Day will be the ‘grand finale’ held on the last day of Languages Week, with a sharing of foods and song from all cultures. There will be food for purchase, we will have music (everyone is welcome to nominate their favourite song of their language), and we can share in games and stories of different cultures.

The most fun will be a chance to dress-up in your cultural clothes and we are highly encouraging everyone to be part of this. Whether your culture is one of many in the school or one of few, we want to see you dressed in your cultural pride.

Thank you sincerely,

The Year 9 Leaders
