Mia continues to shine

Mia and her horse, Quintabell, who she has trained herself, are competing in the Secondary 1.05m Combined Training at Nationals.  She is also the Team Vic Combined Training Captain, in which she went through a vigorous process to attain.  She had her first official role as team captain 2 weeks ago at the Team Vic Training Weekend, where she displayed great team spirit and leadership.

The next event for Mia is the Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool State Championships held at Werribee Park Equestrian Centre from September 29th to October 3rd.

Mia will also be competing in numerous interschool events this year, representing Seymour College, with a goal to qualify for Nationals again next year.

Australia Day Debate

On Sunday, 20th August, six year 11 students from Seymour College travelled to the Avenel Community Hall to debate the topic ‘Should we change the date of Australia Day?’ They were met by organisers John Hyland and Dick Rankin, who had contacted the school earlier in the year to organise this debate and provide a wonderful opportunity for students to present to the public and practise their oral presentation skills. This debate met outcomes for Unit 2, Outcome 2, Exploring Argument where students had to unpack how arguments are intentionally constructed to influence others then students need to apply these principles to their own attempts at persuasion. These 6 students have been studying newspaper articles, opinion pieces and focusing on persuasive devices such as the use of emotive language, inclusive language, anecdotes and many other techniques that writers employ to position their audience. They were being assessed based on their ability to understand the language of argument (which is not necessarily their own viewpoint) and being able to present this point of view orally to an audience. Each student took turns to present their point of view, supported by evidence and all of them spoke with clarity, poise and confidence. The speeches were well-received by the audience and we left the community with ‘food for thought’. It was a privilege to see our students excel and perform outside of school and looking forward to our next opportunity to debate some serious topics.

Well done Jonathon Vearing, Kylah Rogers, Zac Drayton, Finbar O’Sullivan, Cooper Dickinson and Kobi Banks for their participation, bravery and effort. Seymour College is very proud of your wonderful work!
