Principal's Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
Over the last few weeks, there has certainly been a flurry of activities and events throughout the college. One of the events that I had the pleasure of attending was the Year 11 debate at the Avenel Memorial Hall on Sunday afternoon. Students debated the topic "Australia Day - should it be on the 26th of January?" The event was well attended, and the debate certainly showcased the talented orators we have here in our school.
Our school was also well represented at the Seymour Vietnam Veteran's Day last week, with students in attendance and Georgia Donnelly and Liam Reyne delivering speeches. See the Defence Mentor page for further details.
Our common curriculum day with other schools in the Mitchell and Murrindindi Network was a highlight last week, with staff relishing the opportunity to attend PD and interact with staff in other schools. I know many returned with ideas and actions to implement in their classrooms and across the school.
I travelled to Doveton College with Susan Watson, Liz Tregenza and the Our Place team on Thursday 16th, to look at the implementation of the Berry Street Education Model across their College. It was both informative and inspiring and will assist us in our continued implementation of the program in our school. This program helps students by:
- understanding the benefits of trauma-informed teaching on child development and ability to learn
- creating a supportive and trauma-informed positive education classroom
- bolstering student-teacher relationships
- applying positive relational classroom behaviour management strategies
- instilling strengths-based practices across the college.
Today, it was great to see the wonderful costumes at our book parade and so many families cheering the children on.
Hope everyone has a great week.
Regards
Debbie Oliver
