Reconciliation Week Activities

Prep News

In literacy, we focused on the ‘l’ sound and connected it to a living thing – a lion – for fun and meaningful learning. We had a roaring good time exploring lions as part of our inquiry topic on living things! The children created their own lions while investigating animal features and using their shape knowledge to design triangle noses, circle eyes and faces, and a mix of straight and curved lines. We also practised patterning by creating unique manes for each lion.

Over the past two weeks, the Grade 1 students have been exploring measurement, with a particular focus on length and mass. They have measured hand span, arm span, and height, and compared objects to determine whether they are shorter or longer. Students have also investigated mass through activities such as hefting and using scales, learning to identify objects as heavier, lighter, or about the same weight.

Last week, the 1/2 unit visited St Monica’s Church as part of their Religious Education learning. Father Jackson spoke to the children about the meaning of the Sacrament of Baptism. He explained how baptism welcomes both children and adults into God’s family, helping the students deepen their understanding of this special sacrament. Students were shown the baptismal font and Paschal candle which are used during the ceremony. Many of the children shared knowledge and memories of their own baptismal experiences or ceremonies of those that they have attended.

In our handwriting lessons we have been learning how to join our letters for joint writing. We have been focusing on the letters s and q.

We have begun our new religion unit, Sacraments of Initiation. Our first few lessons have been looking at Baptism and its symbols as the primary Sacrament of Initiation by which an adult or child is received into the church, the community of faith.

We wish the group of students who began their Reconciliation sessions last week and wish them all the best for their Sacrament celebration on Thursday 3rd of July.
