Foundation Classroom News

What a fornight!  Ronny and Friends Adventures, Celebrating Cultures Week and the fabulous Show Case and Reconciliation Week!  If your child has been feeling a bit tired, there is a good reason why.  We've been so busy writing, reading, crafting, eating and having lots and lots of fun!

Celebrating Cultures Week

Our Foundation students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about different cultures this fortnight.  We studied the United Kingdom and learned about their flags, food and culture and how although their culture is similar to ours, it has a different flavour.  Talking about flavours.... the children really enjoyed their morning tea of scones, jam and cream. So yummy!

We also had a number of students dress up for the Show Case, so there were many Queens, Kings, Princesses and Princes around the classroom.

Supporting the development of your child's Reading and Writing skills

Regular practise of letter/sound relationships (phonemic awareness) and decoding and encoding sounds (sounding out and blending together sounds) is the necssary foundation to becoming a good reader, writer and speller.  In the Foundation classroom we are continuing to develop these skills through our phonics, reading and writing programs.

You can assist your child to develop these skills at home too. We have a wide variety of readers your child can select from to take home to practise their reading each day.  They have also been given their first lists of words to read, write and spell.  Each of these words can be sounded out and new lists will be added as your child's reading progresses. Just 5 minutes a day can make a big difference.

Reconciliation Week

During Reconciliation Week, we have been learning about Indigenous culture, aboriginal foods and the importance of sharing our land in respectful ways.  They students have enjoyed learning about the number of different aboriginal languages that are spoken throughout Australia and the origins and meaning of the smoking ceremony.

As a class, the students created a recount of the ceremony and then wrote it into their Writing books, with a focus on our handwriting and letter placement. Check out some of these examples.  Well done students!
