Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Merciful Jesus, I consecrate myself today and always

to Your Most Sacred heart;

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I implore

that I may ever love You more and more;

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You;

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Your love for me;

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, Your Kingdom Come.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, convert sinners, save the dying,

and deliver the Holy Souls from purgatory.

Amen.

The month of June is known for the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As Presentation Sister Susan Miller reminded me recently, this devotion is an integral part of the charism of Venerable Nano Nagle. The feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated on the 27th June and it is a custom to pray the Novena 9 days leading up to this feast.

This following extract from the Franciscan Media website explains the basis of this devotion. It is no surprise that Venerable Nano Nagle directly incorporated it into her daily life.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a profound symbol of divine love and mercy, representing the heart of Christ that was pierced on the cross for the salvation of humanity. This dedication holds great significance in Catholic spirituality, a powerful reminder of God’s boundless love and compassion for His people. Rooted in centuries of tradition, the Sacred Heart devotion invites the faithful to deepen their relationship with Jesus, recognizing His profound sacrifice and unwavering love.

Praying to the Sacred Heart is an act of faith and trust in God’s infinite goodness. It allows believers to connect with Jesus personally, seeking His guidance, comfort, and strength in times of need. These prayers to Jesus, often accompanied by specific litanies and novenas, encourage reflection on the immense love that Jesus has for each individual. Through these devotions, we are reminded that we are loved unconditionally by our Savior, who understands our struggles and triumphs, and we are called to share this love with others in our daily interactions.

Moreover, devotion to the Sacred Heart emphasizes the importance of the sacrament of reconciliation, or confession, in our spiritual lives. This sacrament allows believers to seek repentance and forgiveness for their sins, ultimately leading them closer to God. By promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of this sacrament, the Sacred Heart devotion encourages a life of ongoing conversion and renewal, where the faithful are inspired to embody the love of Christ in their actions and words.

In addition to personal devotion, the Sacred Heart of Jesus has inspired numerous religious congregations and initiatives focused on serving those in need, spreading the message of love and compassion worldwide. Devotees are encouraged to embody the virtues of the Sacred Heart, fostering communities centered on kindness, empathy, and charity. Through this devotion, believers are not only drawn closer to God’s heart but are also compelled to be instruments of His love in the world.
