Year Three
Spotlight on Learning
Ephesus Community
Dear Families,
This week our learning centered around Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. We reflected on the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and through Jesus’ teachings, explored the importance of building respectful, healing relationships with Indigenous communities and one another. We discussed the power of acknowledging past injustices and saying “sorry” as steps toward unity. In Media Arts, students created cover pages inspired by this year’s Reconciliation Week theme, “Bridging Now to Next.”

This week in our learning...
Religious Education
We learned how forgiveness, like the actions of the Good Shepherd, can heal broken relationships. This tied into Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day, as we reflected on making things right within our community, especially with First Nations peoples. Through Aboriginal and Jesus’ stories, we explored themes of belonging, respect, and healing.
Maths
We are learning how and why we measure length by choosing the most suitable metric units—millimeters, centimeters, meters, or kilometers—and using measuring tools accurately to compare everyday objects. We also practised estimating lengths and checking the accuracy of our estimates through measurement.
English
In our class novel Yirra and Her Deadly Dog Demon, Yirra's experiences reflect the importance of family, belonging, and cultural pride. Her story helps us learn how important it is to listen to Aboriginal people and treat everyone with kindness and respect. We have also started writing a concise summary of what we read. This involves recalling Who is the subject? What occurred? When did these events occur? Where did these events occur? and Why did these events occur?
Integrated Studies
Continuing with Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, we learned about the 1967 Referendum- when Australians voted to change the rules so that Aboriginal people could be counted in the population and be treated more fairly. Eddie Mabo was also a feature in our learning this week. The Mabo decision was when the court said that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were the first owners of the land and that their land rights should be respected.
Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR
We learned that different problems require different problem-solving strategies. We explored a range of strategies we could use and evaluated which ones were the most effective for each situation.
AUSLAN
Words can be translated in different ways in AUSLAN. You don't always need a sign for every word, you can use other features of AUSLAN such as eye contact or facial expressions. We have practised words- can ,sorry, read, start, work, write, sit, stand, can, name, morning.
