Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

 Dear Families,

Week 6 is complete! We are heading towards a busy time for assessments and mid-year reports. This week we focused on Reconciliation through the lens of Jesus' teachings and the importance of reconciliation with the Indigenous people of Australia. By reading the the book 'Say Yes' students reflected on fairness, kindness, seeking forgiveness and

friendship.

Religious Education focus: Thank you parents for sending through some gorgeous photos of Baptism and Initiation ceremonies. We will compile them and talk about Catholic traditions such as Baptism and naming ceremonies within other faiths.

English focus:This week we have focused on the spelling patters 'ar', 'al' and 'a' to spell some of the following words. Students are eagerly adding to their vocabulary bank by studying spelling and grammar through a research based structured approach to learning reading and writing. You can reinforce their spelling skills by practising some of the phrases we have learnt this week.

Mathematics focus: This week we continued to work on subtraction. We focused on how subtraction problems can be solved by using addition number facts (also known as inverse operations).

SEL: Keeping with the theme of Reconciliation Week, we looked at the book 'Respect' by Aunty Fay Muir, a book with beautiful illustrations about what respect means in indigenous culture.

History:  This term we are focusing on the book 'My Place' by Nadia Wheatly, to learn about Australian and Indigenous history. This week we looked at 'Yabbies' an engaging story about how indigenous children goes on adventures to find food off the land. The website https://myplace.edu.au/ has some wonderful resources to support our focus text, 'My Place'.

  • Please make it a point to read the readers students bring home, even if they seem easy to decode. Our aim is to build fluency at the stage they are learning during phonics and build comprehension skills. Some questions you may ask based on any book are as follows.

  • Model using prompts like:
    "Point to where it shows...."
    “I wonder why…”
    "what makes you think...."
    “This reminds me of…”
    "Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
