Dear Families,
This week, students travelled to Melbourne to visit the Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, and the Old Treasury Building. This excursion was a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding and make real-world connections to what they’ve been learning in this semester’s History unit.
Below are some quotes from our students, sharing their thoughts and experiences from the day.
The Year 6 students went to the city and at the city we had dinner at Universal. The pizza was great and so was the pasta. We got to sit with our friends, which was fun. The waitresses were super nice and they served us really well. Everyone had a great time and it was a wonderful way to end the excursion. I really loved the pizza.

At the Immigration Museum, we explored different displays with information about immigrants, with each table group presenting their findings to the whole class. We also used passports, which was a great idea to help us follow the map and answer questions along the way.

The Melbourne Museum was a fun and intriguing building where all students were able to participate in engaging activities. These activities required teamwork, problem solving, and an adventurous mindset. At the museum, students saw fascinating artifacts and areas that told many stories.

It was a great experience to visit the Old Treasury Building in Melbourne was designed by a nineteen-year old architect named John James Clark . We enjoyed learning that the Old Treasury Building in Melbourne was built to store gold bullion discovered during Victoria’s 1850s gold rush.

This week, students continued their study of words containing the root hydr, and began exploring words with the prefix ex-. They examined the meanings of these word parts and how they contribute to the overall meaning of new vocabulary.

This week, students continued their engagement with our class novel, Us Mob Walawurru by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka. As part of our literacy focus, they revisited the four sentence types—Statements, Questions, Commands, and Exclamations—and explored how these can be used effectively in writing. Students also applied their understanding of factual recounts to research and begin planning a factual recount about Federation.
Mathematics Focus:
In Mathematics, students focused on developing their understanding of number patterns and algebraic thinking. They learned how to generate number sequences using a function machine, write the corresponding rule as an algebraic equation, and determine the rule by analyzing input and output values.
Integrated Studies Focus
This week, students learned about the life of Lachlan Macquarie and his vision for the future of the Australian colony. They used their research skills to answer questions about his contributions, drawing information from reputable sources to support their findings.
Social & Emotional Learning Focus
This week, students continued to build on their emotional regulation skills. They explored strategies to help manage intense emotions and practiced using positive self-talk to influence both their feelings and actions in constructive ways. We also focused on self-regulation techniques that students can use when they feel overwhelmed or frustrated, empowering them to respond to challenges with greater confidence and control.
