Mathematics

You may have heard your children talk about the learning pit. This is language many of our teachers use around the process of moving past ‘within their learning. The Learning Pit is a simple way to describe what learning can feel like when something is challenging.
When children are learning something new, they may start in a place where they feel confident and comfortable. Then they reach the Learning Pit, a point where they might feel confused, frustrated, stuck, or unsure. This is a normal and important part of learning!
With encouragement, persistence, questions, mistakes and support from others, children can work their way out of the pit. When they do, they often discover that they understand something they couldn't do before.
The Learning Pit reminds us that struggling doesn't mean we can't learn, it means our brains are working and growing. As parents and teachers, we can help by encouraging children to have a go, learn from mistakes and celebrate the effort they put into challenging tasks and love Maths even when it's hard!
