YEARBOOK
The Year 5/6 students who worked on the very first Lucas Primary School yearbook were excited to send the final proof off to the printer last week and were very excited as the printed copies of Lucas Journeys arrived at school today.
Our students were the creators of every part the yearbook from the name, to the content of the pages, interviewing staff or students, writing up their stories, formatting, and even choosing the printer! What an incredible achievement.
We are looking forward to sharing their beautiful work with our Lucas community when they arrive, and hope that this is the first of many yearbooks which showcase our fabulous students and school.
LIFE SKILLS
In our Life Skills elective this term, we were taught how to cook meals such as stir fry, tacos, and pizza. We also learnt how to make some desserts like cookies and cupcakes. When we were cooking food in the kitchen, we were being taught how to use objects such as knives, ovens, and stoves safely. It was also a really good way for us to practise working with others as a team. Once we finished our cooking element, we then went to Melbourne for our end of year celebration which was an ‘Amazing Race’.
Before we left, we had some preparation for Melbourne. We were taught how to read maps, look at tram timetables and how it would all work. Once preparation was over, we left to do the Amazing Race in Melbourne. We were all split into separate teams with one adult in our group. Each group was racing across Melbourne to try and get to all the places our tasks told us. We went to Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Central and Parliament just to name a few. Once there, we completed challenges and safely rushed to finish all the challenges first. All of the students loved the experience of being allowed to travel around Melbourne with their friends. Once we finished our race, everyone made their way back to the train station where we were allowed to buy some food for the train ride back to Ballarat. Life skills this semester was a great experience for everyone who participated.

Coding
This semester in the Coding elective, we learnt how to use block code to create our own games. We learnt how to use the program ‘Scratch’ and Hour of Code. The students had the opportunity to make their own jumping and ping pong games. We also had the chance to give and receive feedback to help make our games better and fix any glitches. The students also had the opportunity to use Sphero’s with the help of Aaron from the Ballarat Tech School. We had a great time learning how to code!
Energy Breakthrough
In Week 7 the Energy Breakthrough team went to Maryborough for a 3-day camp, and to compete against 95 other primary school teams from all around Australia. We slept on Princes Park oval in tents. On Wednesday it was all about our learning, where we presented our display & presentation as well as demonstrating our knowledge of the HPVs in the design & construction and scrutineering. Later that evening, from 6:30 pm ‘til 8:30pm, we hit the track to test out our HPVs and set a time to determine our grid positions to start the race for Thursday.
The next day we started our race at 9am and both of our teams had an amazing start to the race. It was a long hot day and after some rollovers, our teams did an incredible job to finish the first day of racing. During our free time after the race most of us were playing soccer with other schools and some of the others were playing cricket or both.
The second day of racing started at 6am and the first 3 riders were up at 5am, ready to hit the track once again. It was a much better time for racing because the morning was much cooler than the previous day. Jack and I were the two first riders and we were able to stay in the trike for an hour each because it was cooler. With some challenges, we finished the race in 17th and 22nd. Ivy and I got drenched in water from the rest of the team as part of the celebration.
Overall, we beat all of the Ballarat schools and came 12th and 20th overall. We had so much fun and met so many people. We represented our school so well and we would like to thank our cheer squad for always cheering us on!
