Grade 4 Community News

The Grade 4 team would like to welcome our students, families and community to an exciting year of learning in 2025! We have spent the first weeks of school setting up our classrooms with the help of our students. They have used their voices to identify areas they think are important when creating a safe space for learning and growing. We have created shared expectations for all learning areas and set ourselves up for a successful year ahead. Students and teachers have enjoyed getting to know each other and practising skills we will be using throughout the school year.

READING

In Reading, students have been identifying their reading interests and the features of fiction and non-fiction texts. Each class has worked together to create shared independent reading protocols and practised using them in the classroom. We have also been building up our Reciprocal Teaching skills of Predicting, Clarifying, Questioning and Summarising. These skills will be used throughout the year to assist students in understanding what they are reading. Classes have started reading our Term 1 serial text, ‘Dragonkeeper’ by Carole Wilkinson. We will be learning new words from this text in our vocabulary lessons throughout the term.

WRITING

In Writing, we have worked together to identify challenging parts of the writing process and come up with some solutions to those problems. Students then used this resource as they wrote their first imaginative narrative for the year. In week 2, we began looking at note taking skills, as well as how to expand notes into full sentences. Students will be using these skills throughout the year as we begin our Read to Learn units and as we start writing different types of texts. We have also reviewed and practised techniques for editing and revising our writing. As students have reread their writing, they have been able to make changes like adding, removing or changing words. They have also been able to check that they have used capital letters and punctuation correctly. We are looking forward to practising and building on these skills in week 3.

MATHS

In Maths, students got to know each other by surveying their peers and creating a picture graph to represent the birthdays in their class. Students have built their understanding of protocols surrounding working with partners, using whiteboards and displaying their work in their maths books. Students have worked hard to maintain high standards of presentation in their books which will set them up for success in the year to come. We have also learnt a number of games to help us practise skills like addition, subtraction and working with peers. Ask your child to show you how to play Get Out of My House! We will be moving into our first maths unit of Addition and Subtraction in week 3.
