Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,
Welcome back for the year!
Term 1 is well underway, and students have been settling in well, adjusting to our new bell times. We have loved hearing all about the student’s holidays and all the wonderful activities students participated in. It’s amazing to see how they are consistently following our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and Growth.
Meet the team
This past week, we have been working on our Learning to Learn program. During this time, we have settled students back into school and work together to set routines, protocols and classroom agreements. This year has been very exciting with the year three’s beginning the BYOD program. Students have been bringing their iPads to school and we have all been working towards using these in the classroom.
Reading
In reading, we have been focusing on differing comprehension strategies, discussing what these look like, and learning to leave tracks while reading. We will then use these within our reciprocal reading groups. We also introduced our TakeHhome Reading Protocols, which ensure students select books suited to their reading ability and track their reading progress. This year, if students reach 200 nights, a big event will happen at the end of the year with Ms Bettio.
Writing
In writing, students explored the four sentence types (statements, questions, commands, and exclamations) and worked on editing their writing for punctuation and clarity. We’ve also started teaching note-taking strategies, helping students identify key information and effectively use symbols and abbreviations.
Maths
In math, we have discussed the importance of creating a fish bowl so that all students can participate in discussions about a model activity. This week, we have begun exploring patterns. Students investigated number sequences, explored growing and repeating patterns, and applied problem-solving strategies.
Reminders
- Please make sure your children bring their hats to school as they are required to wear them outside during Term 1 and 4.
- Please make sure that students bring their iPads to school, and they are fully charged every day as we are incorporating this through all of our learning.
- Students need to have their own pencil cases this year, we recommend them leaving them at school to save them from being left at home. Please only bring to school the items required on the book list. Any gel pens and sharpies will need to stay home.
- Students are encouraged to be reading at home each night, they are aiming for 200 nights of reading. This year, students reading journals will stay in their tubs and be taken out each morning for them to fill in.
- Please sign the BYOD user agreement so students can be using the iPads in the classroom ASAP: https://forms.gle/U6b7tSj6C8aRdvFG8
