Senior Students Update
It was 2019 but it only seems like yesterday that we welcomed the Year 12 graduating Class of 2024 to MITS.
Our aim has been to make Melbourne a place where they feel safe and welcome, a place that they can call home for now and perhaps the future. Thank you to each and every family for entrusting us with your son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunty, and ‘old man’.
At the fellas boarding house we have had many conversations, both deep and meaningful, and hilarious during the past 12 months. Reflecting on adventures from Year 7, spending weeks in Howard Springs, schooling in Darwin, transitioning to Pathway Schools, school camps, sports, making new friends, sharing sad times, and laughing at all the funny things that have happened.
Conversations with our Year 12 students have highlighted how much the MITS journey has meant to them, but also how important home is. “MITS is my family, and I feel scared about leaving”; “I’m gonna miss my mates”; “I can’t wait to get back into the bush!”
We congratulate you; we celebrate you, and we share in your success, and although you may be far you are always in our hearts and minds. Thank you for coming into our lives.
Finally, hold fast to the treasures of your ancestors and seek the knowledge of the modern world to benefit your people.

In November Sam and Bruce spent a week in Sydney completing work experience at Kennards Hire, and they also learnt to surf! They experienced various facets of the organisation, working at the Brookvale hire branch, working with the marketing team at the Group Support Office, visiting the Museum exploring the machinery and history of Kennards; and dining with Prue and Andy Kennard.
Kennards is a family-run and oriented business and prior to the work experience week the Kennards team and MITS families connected online to discuss support for the boys and the program of events for the week. Sam and to Bruce were hosted in Freshwater on the Northern Beaches by the wonderful Kovacs family of Kirsty (nee Kennard), Andy, Dan, Amelie, Charlie and Ruby. Thank you to Benita Gevorkian for your wonderful support and organisation, Mei Ling for your diligence and guidance, and the entire Kennards team for making this an unforgettable occasion!
