Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 3, Term 2

WEEK 3 LEARNING IN...

📚 LITERACY

In Reading, we will be finding ways to connect to our mentor text, 'Welcome to Country'. In particular, we will be looking into the images to find connections and asking questions to help deepen our understanding of the text.

In Writing, we will be working on sentence structure, trying to vary our sentence beginnings and ensuring our sentences are easy to read and make sense. We will also consider sentence conventions including using capital letters accurately and using punctuation in the right place.

In Phonics, we will be focusing on the digraph 'th'. We will notice that sometimes the digraph is 'unvoiced' like in think, throw and thank or 'voiced' like in them, this, they and that.

What you can do at home

Continue encouraging your child to read every night. Even if your child is rereading a well loved text for the fourth or fifth time, it is still a valuable exercise, they are building reading  fluency - an important reading skill to develop also helping to practise accuracy and expression. Please remember to record your child's home reading in their Reading Log each day and celebrate the effort they put into daily reading routines.

🎲 NUMERACY

This week we will begin our focus on addition and subtraction, particularly exploring counting on from the largest number when adding.

Fluency games and challenging tasks will be presented to provide students with a variety of opportunities to practise addition strategies.

What you can do at home

Dice or playing cards are simple tools that can be easily used at home to help your child build confidence and familiarity with simple number facts. Roll two or three dice or deal two or three cards and add the numbers together. Remember to encourage your child to count on from the largest number when adding numbers together.

 CBL - Country

This week students will consider the question, 'What is special about country?'

We will explore what traditional owners respect about country and how indigenous communities connect to it.

🧒🏻 WELLBEING

This week we will consider how our personal strengths help us to be good friends and family members. Students will describe how to use strengths such as cheerfulness, encouragement and optimism both in the school setting and at home. They will explore how using personal strengths generates a sense of pride.
