Learning Diversity

Mrs Lorna Stranieri

Pope Paul VI has stated (1965), all students regardless of race, age or gender, by virtue of their dignity as human persons, have a right to an education that is suited to their particular needs and adapted to their ability.

At School of the Good Shepherd we value belonging, compassion and growth. Accepting all children and celebrating their unique differences is crucial in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every child feels valued and respected for who they are, without labels or preconceptions. When we embrace diversity we foster an atmosphere of understanding, empathy and respect.  It is important to teach our children the value of acceptance, kindness, compassion and inclusion so that every child feels valued and accepted.  Together we can create  a school where everyone feels safe, supported and free to be their authentic selves without judgment. Free to be Diverse Learners.

WHAT ARE DIVERSE LEARNERS?

A diverse learner is someone who has unique strengths, challenges and learning styles.  They may come from different backgrounds, cultures, or have varying abilities.  Diverse learners require individualised approaches to education that cater to their specific needs.  It is important to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for them to thrive and to be able to access the curriculum just like their peers.

At School of the Good Shepherd we value the diversity of all our students and recognise each student as a sacred creation, made in the image of God.  The Learning Diversity team works together with classroom teachers, families and allied health services to ensure that all students can access the curriculum, just like their peers and that they are ‘Known by their name’.
