Wellbeing update

by Ms Felicity Shiel-Jones, Student Services Leader (Wellbeing)

Meet Ellie!

We are trialling having a wellbeing dog in the Wellbeing Hub on Mondays during Term 2.

Ellie is an adorable and placid natured Golden Retriever who is spending time in our space working with our Wellbeing eam.

IDAHOBIT - Box Hill Community Event

Our Wellbeing team helped organise a community event at Box Hill Central Shops on Friday for International Day Against Homophobic Discrimination. A group of student leaders supported the event by attending.

All Staff Training Sessions

Staff have involved themselves in two professional development seminars, firstly on the Respectful Relationships DE Curriculum where we investigated how our school:

  • Promotes women’s independence and decision-making (e.g. are girls' voices heard equally in the classroom to their male peers, use of the gym at lunchtime)
  • Builds new social norms that foster personal identities and challenge rigid gender stereotypes
  • Fosters our young people to have healthy peer relationships (being upstanders) and supporting a more inclusive version of what masculinity looks like.

Providing this social and emotional curriculum on building respectful relationships plays a critical role in the prevention against family violence, 95% of the time committed by a male, which we have horrifically seen so much of in the media this year.

Last week, aligning with IDAHOBIT, we participated in Safe Schools, educating ourselves on current gender affirming terminology to use and reflecting on how our curriculum and teaching practice can contribute to creating a more inclusive environment for our LGBTQIA+ and build upon our communities' awareness.
