Premiers Reading Challenge
This challenge encourages children and students to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online. Since the Challenge first began in 2005, more than 4.3 million students have read over 60 million books. Details on how to sign up and student logins will be sent home shortly. Please keep an eye out for this information.
Boroondara Young Writers Competition 2024
This competition is now open to students in Year 5 -Year 12 who live, or study in Boroondara. Held in partnership with the Rotary Association, these awards offer cash prizes as well as the Honor of having your work published in the Boroondara Literary Awards Anthology.
The Junior Section is open to Year 5 & 6 and has two categories. Prizes- 1st $300, 2nd $200 and 3rd $100 in both sections.
Prose- The word length must be between 300-500 words
Poetry- The length must be less than 100 lines
Entries close at 11.59pm on Friday 17th of May 2024. There is no theme and the competition is free to enter however parents are required to upload the writing as permission must be given for publication in the Anthology if awarded a place. Real Pigeons- Andrew McDonald Visit
On Wednesday the 1st of May Andrew Mc Donald, author of the ‘Real Pigeons’ and ‘Hello Twiggy’ series, will be visiting to run workshops with the students in Year 5 & 6. This year Andrew joins an elite group of authors who have been nominated for the 2024 Children’s Book Council Awards.
Solway Primary School received a partial grant funding for this workshop as part of the Boroondara Young Writers Competition. We hope many Year 5 & 6 students will be able to put forward their excellent writing in the hope of winning cash prizes and the chance to become a published author. Following Andrew’s workshops, he has kindly agree to sign any students’ books from any year level, brought in from home. If you have an Andrew Mc Donald book to have signed, please bring these to the library at 1pm on Wednesday.
