Containers and the 10 cent Deposit Scheme

To assist with funding for this year’s Grade 6 graduation, we are collecting the water bottles and juice boxes from the Subway orders each Friday and returning them for 10 cents through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme.

A special white bin has been placed in each classroom to collect all the drink containers from the subway orders, plus any other drink containers that are brought into our classrooms for snack or lunch, that can be returned for 10 cents. The Year 6 Leaders will be rostered to collect the contents of the special white bins on a regular basis.

Consideration is currently being given to expand this program across the school for other containers that attract the 10cent deposit. More details to follow shortly.

World Environment Day

This year’s World Environment Day campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the 2024 World Environment Day global celebrations.

World Environment Day, marked annually on 5 June, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Over the past five decades, the Day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach. Tens of millions of people participate online and through in-person activities, events and actions around the world.

According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population and threatening roughly half of global GDP (US$44 trillion). The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world.

We are currently planning an activity to mark World Environment Day at Vermont Primary School. So watch this space!
