LIBRARY NEWS
Exciting news from the library. We already have 18 books on the 'Read more in May' list!
Many of us are wondering how many books the St Mary's Community will read in one month, will it be 200 books? Will it be 600 books? This week I distributed bookmarks for the students to use in tier books and to write any finished books. They can drop these into the library to get a new one as needed. A reminder that a book is a book picture books AND chapter books all count and for the adults playing along at home big chapter books all count! Feel free to add to our list on the bookmarks or by sending me an email. There is of course no pressure for everyone to participate, it's just a little fun. I am also intrigued as to what number we will get to.
A reminder that LOOP orders for Book Cub are due this week. It is really easy to order from the website - https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx you can view the catolgue via this platform and order directly. I will be closing this on Monday so that books ordered can be processed.
As always thanks for your support of the library, the reminders of library day and 'where is that book?' are very much appreciated.
Happy Reading! Miss Kat
Year 2 - Narrative Writing: Using Similes
Our Year 2 students have been exploring visual literacy through the story 'The Boy and the Elephant'. This rich, wordless text gave them the perfect opportunity to create their own sentences to match the story on each page. Students used similes to help express the main character’s feelings, especially in a moment where he thinks he might lose his elephant friend forever. Here are some of the thoughtful sentences our Year Two students created.
The boy felt worried, like a possum getting scared away. – Ethan
My heart is heavy as an anchor in the sea. – Zac
My heart shattered like a broken mirror. – Luca
My heart was beating like a ball bouncing up and down. - Lisa
I feel scared like a moth about to get stepped on. - Robbie
My chest is heavy like a bag with a thousand pieces of metal. - Henry
I am angry like an angry lion. - Oscar
I feel like my heart has broken into shattered glass - Carter
I feel scared like I am about to fall off a cliff with rocks under the water. - Theo
My heart felt broken like a broken mirror. - Annabelle
I felt heartbroken like a snapped stick. - Konstantine
My mind is racing like a waterfall after a rain storm. - Navy
I felt still like a mountain. - Amira
I felt alone like a kitten who can't find its mum. - Rose
My heart felt like a ripped book. - Mischa
I felt empty like an empty water bottle - Eveie.
My tears dropped like a waterfall. -Eleanor
I feel lonely like a sad puppy. - Mila
My heart was broken into two like a ripped book. - Michael-Angelo
SPORTS NEWS
AFL 9s by Gabe
Last Friday, the Yr Fives and Sixes played AFL 9s against St Josephs, Malvern at Ferrie Oval. They were a strong and competitive team and kept us on our toes. Although we didn’t score as many goals as our opposition, we still showed good sportsmanship by encouraging one another, trying our best and shaking hands at the end of the game. Many of us are new to AFL football and are looking forward to more practice and training so that we can improve. Something I’m looking forward to is winning a game and helping each other to score a few goals.
Netball by Maylissa
While some of us played AFL there were two teams playing netball against St Joseph’s in their playground. St Mary’s have two netball teams this year and are a mix of experienced and first time players. We had time to play some really competitive games against St Joseph’s. Both sides showed great teamwork and accurate passing. Our defenders played a very important role too. After the game all players lined up and gave each other a hi-five and said ‘G.G’ which means ‘Good Game’. It was our first inter school sports and we had fun.
Cross Country by Mia
Last Thursday the 30th of May, thirty students from Year 3-6 students, who had previously competed in the 2km and 3km St Mary’s House Cross Country, represented St Mary’s in the Holt District Cross Country competition. We were competing against the seven other schools in the Holt District, St Joseph’s Malvern, St Columbas Elwood, St James’ Brighton, St Agnes’ Highett, Our Lady of Lourdes Armadale, St Anthony’s Glenhuntly and St Catherine’s Moorabbin. It was a great opportunity to meet new people, and enjoy the beautiful Autumn weather as we ran and cheered at Bald Hill Park in Clayton.
The top twenty in each race received a certificate and the top eight finishers qualified to represent Holt in the Beachside Division competition on Tuesday the 26th of May.
Congratulations to Mila Year 4, Pearl Year 5, Bela and Orion Year 6 who qualified to run in the Beachside Division competition. We are wishing them good luck and are proud that you are representing St.Marys and the Holt District.
A special congratulations to Pearl Varney, for her fantastic 3km race in the 11 Year Old Girls age group placing second in a close finish.
Thank you to all of the students who participated in the Cross Country and Miss Broderick, Ms Schultz, Mrs Abiad and Ms Kat for their involvement and support throughout the event. It was also great to see so many family members cheering on our St Mary’s team.
Holt Soccer by Marko
On Friday the 1st of May St Mary’s 5 and 6 classes as well as some year 4 students went to compete and represent St Mary’s at Holt District Soccer competition at Caulfield Park. Two teams jumped on the bus at 9am and arrived back to school at 2.45pm exhausted!
A special thank you to the four Year Four boys who played on the day in order to complete the Boys team and allow for players to rest on a rotation.
We got to practise our skills and compete while still having fun. It was a great experience for all of us. Playing in this round robin also made us use our team work and helped us to learn to work together. We also enjoyed cheering on our teammates as loud as we could.
We had great coaching from Heinz, Mrs.Brathwaite, Ms.Broderick and Mrs.Abbiad. Thank you for your guidance and expertise. Thank you also to the parents who came to cheer us on. Holt Soccer was an amazing experience.
