Legacy ANZAC Commemoration Service

For the second year, Senior Primary classes attended the Legacy annual ANZAC Commemoration Service for Students. Honorary guests and dignitaries were in attendance and included Defence Force Cadets, school band & choir, and a RAAF fly-over. The ceremony honours Australia's history of service and reflects on the values of courage, sacrifice and community. We believe it's imperative to instil the importance of honouring our serving soldiers, both past and present. Held annually at Melbourne's iconic Shrine of Remembrance, this event began in the early 1930s as a way to ensure young people understand the meaning of ANZAC and the impact of war on families and communities. 94 years later, it continues to connect students with stories, ceremonial traditions, and the ongoing legacy of service.

Enjoy the following student reflections:

Suspense creeps through me as I stare at the cadets on the GIANT screen. They are perfectly in sync. The audience is quiet until a bellowing voice echoes through the courtyard and all the cadets snap to attention before quickly freezing. The voice starts again and the cadets snap into sharp movements before quickly freezing again.

I’m mesmerized by the cadet’s movements; I absolutely cannot look away. The cadets march into position and freeze. I’m still staring at them still in awe of their performance, it lasts for a moment before a flood of disappointment floods through me. I will never forget the march of the cadets.

As we hop on the bus with Remembrance in our head we head over to the Shrine service! Once we get there, we look around at the amazing statues, and we pin a rosemary and Australian flag to our chests as a sign we will remember them and be forever grateful. Then afterwards, we sit down and listen to the wonderful music they played, like the yidaki (a digeridoo) and the amazing things they also said like how a fourteen year old boy wanted to join the army and how his parents had to sign permission for him. He got in eventually and died six months later when he was almost 15.

My favourite part was that the view was beautiful even though we had to go up a lot of stairs, it was worth it and we got a bit lost inside but we found our way outside!

I really liked going to the top of the Shrine to see the massive view. It was really high! I felt a bit nervous but also happy. I saw lots of cars, so many - like a million! There were lots of school kids down on the ground and lots of buildings in the distance.

On May 5, 2026, all the SP’s went to the Shrine of Remembrance. The Shrine of Remembrance was super enjoyable, we sang Waltzing Matilda, The National Anthem and Flinders Field. It was so cold, I was shivering!!! Other than the freezing weather it was a great excursion, it was a huge honour to be able to be there!!! A 10/10 excursion for me.

On the 5th of May 2026 the Senior Primary students went on an excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance. We were firstly seated when we got there and we ate our recess as the Melbourne High School band was practicing for the songs, then we got to go to a special area of the place where they had all the medals of fallen soldiers. Then we started the ceremony which lasted an hour. We got to explore the place after this before playing in the gardens. I rate this amazing trip a 10/10!
