Brain Breaks

Brain Breaks are an integral part of the Berry Street Body Domain and a huge focus/success of what has been implemented at Bimbadeen.

Brain Breaks, when used effectively, can play a huge role in the attention and focus a student can have on a given task. They are usually shorter than 4 minutes and are interruptions to renew the focus on learning. There is no dedicated time for Brain Breaks as they can occur within any time of the lesson/s, or when attention is low or too high from a some/alot of students. The use of Brain Breaks allow us to reinforce positive classroom behaviours and for the students to build self awareness and develop self regulation. It’s also important to note that the teachers and adults also need these Brain Breaks in day to day life.

There are 2 types of Brain Breaks:

Positively escalating - to increase student energy if the are ‘flat’ ( we lend energy-co regulation)

OR

Positively de-escalating - to calm/centre students if they are escalated ( we lend our calm - co-regulation)

Some benefits of Brain Breaks are:

  • Improved focus and attention
  • Enhanced learning and memory
  • Reduced Stress and anxiety
  • Fewer disruptions
  • Increased motivation and engagement
  • Enhanced emotional regulation

If you ask your child about Brain Breaks I am sure they can run over a few with you. Majority of the ones we do may be exercise out on the fitness track/courts, online movement video to mimic and or mindfulness when needing de-escalating Brain Break. Students at Bimbadeen are learning to understand the purpose and meaning of a Brain Break and to not think of it as a game, but rather a break for the brain to get ready for learning.

Maybe your brain needs a break from time to time, if so, there are many types listed on the internet. If you would like any examples or more information, please feel free to contact.
