Year 6

Fantasy Stories and more....

We’re a happy, busy bunch in Year 6!

Earlier this term, we completed our fantasy stories and published them as books.

We spent some time reading and analysing mentor texts; tuning into text structure and interesting words, making connections and inferences, and focusing on finding the main message and theme. It was great to see students backing up their interpretations and ideas through combining their schema (prior knowledge) and evidence from the text. Sometimes, the moral of the story really makes you stop and think!

Literature Circles are up and running, with groups meeting weekly with the teacher. Students use their time, independently, to delve deeply into the text in readiness for their group meeting. The teachers have been blown away by the depth of thinking and the use of key comprehension skills needed to unpack quality texts.

Students have been exploring measurement, area and perimeter in Maths, using lots of hands-on equipment both inside and outside the classroom. Our Open Night STEM activity was a winner, too!

We have been travelling, virtually, to Europe and North America in Inquiry, researching countries to add to our digital passports. Very shortly, we will begin designing and creating websites to inform others of chosen countries in an effort to persuade them to come and visit!

This term, we visited the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, and had a fun morning of activities at Mooroolbark College. Students have also been representing our school in different sports events and doing very well! Interschool Sports are just around the corner, too!
