Year 11 Psychology

It's fantastic to see Year 11 Psychology students engaging in experiments to improve sleep quality! These results offer some practical solutions for anyone struggling with sleep issues.

In groups they chose different independent variables and dependent variables, ran a control and experimental condition and then analysed the results. The results were obtained from a sleep tracking watch or App unless indicated otherwise.

Here's a summary of the significant findings:

Decreased time to fall asleep with mindfulness: Listening to 10 minutes of mindfulness from the Smiling Minds App at bedtime can help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep.

Increased REM sleep with a warm bath: Taking a warm bath one hour before bed has been shown to increase the amount of REM sleep, which is crucial for restorative rest.

Recorded rain sounds for deep sleep: Listening to recorded rain sounds during sleep has been linked to an increase in deep sleep, which is essential for physical and mental restoration.

Journaling for better reaction time: Open-ended journaling for 15 minutes before sleep has been associated with improved reaction time, suggesting better overall sleep quality.

Lavender oil for improved sleep quality: Using a lavender oil diffuser before sleep has been shown to enhance sleep quality, as measured by a student-designed sleep quality self-report instrument.

Guided meditation for reduced sleep latency: Engaging in guided meditation can reduce sleep latency, meaning it takes less time to fall asleep.

Yoga for increased deep sleep: Spending 15 minutes practicing yoga before sleep has been linked to an increase in deep sleep, promoting better overall rest.

White noise for enhanced deep sleep: Listening to white noise during sleep has been associated with increased deep sleep, which is vital for feeling refreshed and alert during the day.

So – if you are having trouble getting to sleep, or the getting the right amount of sleep, try one of these scientifically tested methods!
