Reading

CURRICULUM FOCUS

In Reading this week we will begin to look at the structure of a procedural text. We will be exploring the parts including a title, ingredients/materials and steps/method.

VOCABULARY

Procedural text- a piece of writing that lists instructions to complete a task e.g. a recipe, How to make a rocket etc.

Title- the name of the procedural text or topic.

Ingredients/Materials- food, paper plates, plastic spoons, knife etc needed to make or complete the procedural text.

Steps/Method- the instructions we need to follow to complete the procedural text.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

With your child, have a look around at home for examples of procedural texts. These could be recipes in a recipe book, instructions from a game etc.

If you didn’t have examples at home you could grab a free Coles or Woolworths magazine from a store and have a look at some of the recipes within these magazines.

See if you and your child together can find the parts of a procedural text including the title, ingredients/materials and steps/method. You might even discuss the type of procedural text such as whether it is a recipe or instructions for a game.
