Mathematics in Year Six:  The Big Australia Adventure Challenging Task

Over the past week, Year Six students have been using a variety of mathematical and inquiry skills in ‘The Big Australia Adventure’ challenging task as part of our Additive Thinking unit.

Students were presented with the following statement:

Holidays! Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? You have 10 days to travel between Australia’s most iconic attractions - from the Big Pineapple to the Big Golden Guitar.

All you need to do is choose which route you will take.

Pack your suitcase, and let’s get planning!

Students were able to collaborate or solve the challenge independently across the double classrooms.

Mathematical Concepts and skills used involved the following:

  • Mapping through Google Maps
  • Adding/subtracting distance
  • Calculating elapsed time
  • Creating daily timetables
  • Mapping on Cartesian coordinates

The excitement and engagement across all classrooms was evident throughout the lessons. Below are some quotes from the Year Six students:

“I liked finding out about new landmarks of Australia.” Jeffrey, 6JK

“It was really fun! Who knew there was a Big Tap?!” Josh, 6JK

“It was interesting and different to anything else we had done this year.” Poppy, 6CP
