Year Three
On Wednesday as part of the National Simultaneous Storytime, the Year Three cohort enjoyed reading the book “Bowerbird Blues” written by Aura Parker. This book stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for blue! It's a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird's search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city.
Before delving into the story, students were encouraged to examine the book cover and make predictions about the plot and characters. Throughout the reading, students were prompted to make inferences about the storyline, characters' motivations, and the ending of the story. Themes such as friendship, love, caring, curiosity, kindness perseverance, and environmental conservation emerged during these discussions.
At the conclusion of the story, participants discussed whether their predictions were accurate and explored alternative endings, encouraging creativity and imagination. Also, independently, students created their own Bowerbird Blues, using a variety of craft materials.
Then students utilised their digital and design skills in creating a slide presentation on Seesaw following the below task instructions.
- Slide One: photo of Bowerbird Blues front cover.
- Slide Two: photo of bird created and give it a name
- Slide Three: List inside and outside traits of your Bowerbird.
- Slide Four: if you were the author how would you write a BLURB for this story?
- Slide Five: Did you enjoy the story? Explain in your own words.
Overall, this wonderful and educational celebration served the purpose of promoting reading different genres of literature, developing literacy skills and fostering a lifelong love of reading books.
