Williamstown Primary School’s Wellbeing Hub

Sometimes a school yard can be an overwhelming place, and we offer a range of alternative lunch time activities for our Willy Kids to take part in. The Play Pod has been a popular addition for creative play, Lego Clubs run for each year level, we open up the Library and of course our Bluestone Lounge is a quiet place to calm and reflect. As part of our commitment to the wellbeing of our Willy Kids, we are setting up another space for students to visit for a more quiet play experience. This will be The Wellbeing Hub and we are utilising the shipping container room which is stationed outside the Bluestone Building.

Over the last few days you will have noticed this taking shape with some landscaping works outside and at times, a hive of industry inside. The Student Wellbeing Leaders from Year 5/6 have been instrumental in helping us create this space with their ideas of how to stock it with games, and in assembling the storage furniture. They will also be responsible for monitoring the area at lunch times and helping our younger students to care for and use the space. Their leadership skills have been amazing, and we are so proud of them for stepping up and caring about the wellbeing of their peers.

All students are aware of the alternatives open to them in regards to lunch time play. Most students simply enjoy the unstructured time, but some students are anxious about finding their friends, losing their friends in the yard, the types of games their friends are playing and the vastness of the playground. If your child can become anxious in the yard, you can remind them about all their choices at school. Talk about it with them at home, and for the children who like a solid plan, remind them what they can access at lunch times each day.
