We are excited to share information about the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival, a vibrant and culturally rich event celebrated on June 10th this year.

What is the Dragon Boat Festival?

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This festival honors the memory of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet and patriot.

Key Traditions

Dragon Boat Racing: One of the most thrilling parts of the festival is dragon boat racing. Teams paddle together in long, beautifully decorated boats to the rhythm of drums, racing to the finish line.

Eating Zongzi: During the festival, people enjoy eating zongzi, which are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. These dumplings can be filled with a variety of ingredients like beans, dates, and meats. Hanging Mugwort and Calamus: these plants are traditionally hung on doors to ward off evil spirits and promote good health.

Why Celebrate? The Dragon Boat Festival is a wonderful opportunity for our community to learn about and appreciate Chinese culture. It’s a time for families to come together, enjoy delicious food, and participate in fun and meaningful traditions. We encourage all students and families to explore the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. Whether it's trying your hand at making zongzi, watching a dragon boat race, or learning about Qu Yuan’s legacy, there are many ways to get involved and celebrate.
